LCM- Least Common Multiple

Where do we use LCM in our daily lives
  • about an event that is or will be repeating over and over?
  • to purchase or get multiple items to have enough.
  • to figure out when something will happen again at the same time.
Finding LCM
Method 1: The common division method

Find LCM of 12,18.

  1. list down the two numbers as shown below.
  2. Then pick the smallest prime number that is at least divisible by one of the numbers  (12 or 18)
  3. then divide the numbers and write the quotient
  4. Repat this the same process. until you have the quotients as 1.

Remember: If a number can not be divided by the prime number just write the same number in the next line too.
  5. Now we have to multiply all the prime numbers and the product will be the LCM.

Method 2: division method

Find LCM of 12,18.

  1. list down the two numbers as shown below.
  2. Then pick the smallest prime number that is divisible by both the numbers.
  3. repeat step 2  until there is no common prime number that divides both the numbers.
  4. Now multiply all prime numbers and the numbers that do not have common prime numbers as shown below.
