Introduction

Union Territories are when a particular place is ruled by the central government cause of some issues in the state. It might be border issues etc. so let us learn what are the union territories are and what are cause they became a union territory .

Reasons of Union territory
Puducherey

Puducherry also known as the French colony of India and is formed of four parts in different states.

Tamilnadu-Puduchery, Karikal
Andrapardesh-Yanam
Kerla-Mahé

All these place were kept as one union territory  because they had to keep a promise form the French (the French asked the Indians to give special treatment to their places but it will be still part of India) and the people living in there refused to be a part of a state.

Delhi

The States Reorganization Act, 1956 created the Union Territory of Delhi from its predecessor, the Chief Commissioner’s Province of Delhi. The Constitution (Sixty-ninth Amendment) Act, 1991 made the Union Territory of Delhi to be known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT)

J&K & Ladakh

The state of Jammu and Kashmir was accorded special status by Constitution of India.

At the same time, a reorganization act was also passed, which would reconstitute the state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The reorganization was done from 31 October 2019.

 

Chandigarh

Chandigarh was located on the border of both states and the states moved to incorporate the city into their respective territories. However, the city of Chandigarh was declared a  to serve as capital of both states. thus This was declared union territory

 

Andaman Nicobar Islands

Situated on the ancient trade route between India and Myanmar, the Andamans were visited by the navy of the English East India Company in 1789, and in 1872 they were linked centrally by the British to the Nicobar Islands. The two sets of islands became a union territory of the Republic of India in 1956.

 

Dadra & Nagar Haveli & daman & diu

Dadra and Nagar Haveli was administered as a de facto state, and Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli, before becoming a union territory in 1961. Daman and Diu were centralized  as part of the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu between 1962 and 1987, becoming a separate union territory when Goa was granted statehood.

In July 2019, the Government of India proposed merging the two territories into a single union territory in order to reduce duplication of services and reduce the cost of administration.

 

Lakshadweep

This is India’s smallest Union Territory “Lakshadweep”. It is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq km. It is a uni-district Union Territory and comprises of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks and ten inhabited islands.
